DESCRIPTION
An expander, also known as part number ST918, is a component in a truck's braking system. It is responsible for ensuring that the brake shoes make contact with the inside of the drum when the brake pedal is pressed. The expander works by pushing the brake shoes outwards against the drum through hydraulic pressure or mechanical force. This action creates friction between the shoes and drum, which slows down or stops the vehicle. Expander assemblies typically consist of a steel housing, a pushrod, and various springs and pins to hold everything in place. A malfunctioning expander can result in reduced braking performance or even complete brake failure, so it's important to have this component inspected regularly during routine maintenance checks.
