DESCRIPTION
An engine brake, also known as a compression brake or Jake brake (named after the manufacturer Jacobs Vehicle Systems), is a device installed on diesel engines to assist in slowing down or stopping the vehicle. The 3871683 model, produced by Cummins, is a popular type of engine brake used in heavy-duty trucks. It works by opening the exhaust valves during the engine's compression stroke, which releases compressed air from the cylinders and creates resistance that slows down the crankshaft and therefore the vehicle. This process helps to reduce wear on traditional friction brakes and can also improve overall control of the truck while descending steep grades.
