The Motor City's legendary engine maker drives the future

What do you think of when you hear Detroit? To us, the city is all about cars, engines, and perseverance. Few companies embody that legacy better than Detroit Diesel. With roots going back to 1938, this brand has built a legacy of durability, innovation, and engineering excellence---right from the heart of Motor City. Let's explore that legacy.

A Wartime Birth

The story begins in 1938, when General Motors established the GM Diesel Division. Its flagship product, the two-cycle Series 71 engine, was an immediate success, powering everything from military equipment in World War II to construction machinery and standby generators. These engines weren't just reliable; they were unstoppable, making Detroit a global name in industrial strength.

In 1955, the company transformed into the Detroit Engine Division, joining forces with GM's Allison Division. This partnership---Detroit Diesel Allison---was a powerhouse combo that dominated the diesel market for decades. In the 1970s and early 1980s, the company branched out from two-cycle engines to introduce its first four-cycle models, staying ahead of evolving industry needs.

The Game-Changer: Series 60

The 1980s marked a major shift. Detroit Diesel separated from the Allison turbine division and focused purely on diesel innovation. In 1987, engineers unveiled the Series 60® engine with a groundbreaking design focused on fuel efficiency and lower emissions. It was the first heavy-duty diesel engine with integrated electronic controls, and it revolutionized the North American Class 8 truck market, quickly becoming the most popular engine in its class.

The Evolution of Detroit Diesel

In 1988, a joint venture between Penske Corporation and General Motors created Detroit Diesel Corporation (DDC). Under this new banner, Detroit Diesel soared. By 1993, it had rocketed its on-highway market share from just 3% to a commanding 33%. In 2000, DaimlerChrysler (now Daimler Truck North America) acquired the company, integrating it into a global commercial vehicle empire.

The 2000s saw over half a billion dollars in investments to modernize Detroit Diesel's manufacturing and develop new products. In 2008, the DD15® engine debuted as part of the new Heavy-Duty Engine Platform. In 2010, the company rolled out BlueTEC® emissions technology, aligning with a future that demanded cleaner, greener performance.

By 2011, Detroit Diesel officially rebranded as simply Detroit®, reflecting its broader scope beyond engines to include transmissions, axles, and telematics. Products like the DT12® transmission, Detroit Connect® telematics, and fully integrated powertrains for Freightliner trucks reinforced Detroit's reputation as an all-in-one performance brand.

Setting the Standard in Safety and Sustainability

In 2015, Detroit again raised the bar with Detroit Assurance®, the industry's first fully integrated suite of safety systems including radar and camera-based features. And when stricter emissions regulations loomed, Detroit's engines were already a year ahead of compliance, proving its commitment to sustainable innovation.

A $375 million investment followed to launch a new mid-range engine line at its Detroit facility, bringing more jobs and more muscle back to the Motor City. Beginning in 2021, Detroit began its next chapter---battery electric products---paving the way for a zero-emissions future. It was a bold but natural step for a company that's always been at the forefront of progress.
